The American Academy of Ophthalmology is a nonprofit federation of medical institutions and ophthalmologists in the United States. Established in 1956 by a group of ophthalmologists from 25 different states, the academy has been involved in ophthalmic training, research, and education ever since. The American Academy of Ophthalmology publishes textbooks on basic and clinical eye problems for students. In order to satisfy increasing reader interests, the academy also releases textbooks that are available for free download via their website. They have released more than 75 books so far ranging from Low Vision Rehabilitation to General Ocular Surgery. All these publications are available online in PDF format with very minimal printing costs to increase accessibility worldwide. The academy offers its members with ophthalmology services at no charge in association with their physicians. For example, when a member suffers from glaucoma, cost of the medicine behind the glaucoma will be reimbursed by the association itself. The academy is managed by a board of directors which is made up of 40 qualified members in good standing who are also ophthalmologists. The executive board has seven directors and is organized into three general sections- education, research, and service. Membership in the American Academy of Ophthalmology is relatively easy for any member who decides to join unlike other prestigious organizations. An application form is inclusive of the following information: annual fee, name of the ophthalmologist, degree obtained, specialty or sub-specialty training, address, phone number, email address and the state in which he or she practices. The State Medical Board License Number should also be specified. The candidate can simply fill out this form and send it to the attention of Advisor Membership at the academy’s headquarters in San Francisco. Once accepted as a member of the association; he or she will receive all official publications twice annually through email. His or her name will be on a mailing list for new members concerning meetings and conferences. A copy of the official verification will be mailed to his or her office or residence. The candidate will also receive a certificate of membership signifying that he is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. The academy is organized into three sections which are basically, organized by areas of interest and expertise. They are the Academy Section, the Clinical Practice Section, and the Low Vision Rehabilitation Section. The Academy section's main aim is to train doctors in order to increase professional expertise for each specialty branch. This section also promotes research among other members in order to promote high standards in all fields of ophthalmology. The Clinical Practice Section promotes certification for individual members who have achieved mastery in ophthalmology. The Low Vision Rehabilitation Section provides information and guidance to patients who need low vision aids such as telescopes and other devices used to improve the capabilities of the visually impaired. The American Academy of Ophthalmology also has several official journals which are published four times a year. These journals include: "Ophthalmology", "Archives of Ophthalmology", "Seminars in Ophthalmology", and the "Transactions of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology". The official journals publish original, peer-reviewed articles on all aspects of ophthalmic studies ranging from basic science to clinical trials. cfa1e77820
